Not for everyone... : Millennial Crutch - Set of 2 Short (4'7" - 5'6") Colors May Vary
I had high hopes for these crutches after reading all the positive reviews, and I spent an entire week trying to learn to love them, but when all was said and done, I went back to the standard aluminum crutches my doc gave me.
First, the things I do not like:
- This might not seem like a big thing, but it really bothers me that there is a left and a right crutch. It is annoying in the middle of the night when you're trying to get to the bathroom to have to make sure that you have the correct crutch in the correct hand. Or in restaurants, when you're trying to leave a table, and you have to sort out which crutch goes where. I just want to be able to grab them and go!
- I seemed to have a lot of trouble with the top of the crutch sliding out from under my arm. I tried adjusting them a zillion different ways, and the only way it didn't slide out was if it was tight against my underarm, which causes pain all its own. This might be my own error or bad adjustment, but I do not have that problem with normal crutches.
- Surprisingly, I really do not like the built-in spring/shock absorber function (which I was very excited about). It made me feel quite unstable, like it wanted to launch me forward before I was ready to move forward. It also felt like it took more energy to make sure I remained stable while just standing and leaning on the crutches, as they're always going up and down as you shift your weight around.
- They seemed quite heavy... and big... and bulky. I had expected that they would be very lightweight and sleek. My aluminum crutches are significantly lighter.
The things I did like:
- They seem well built and very very sturdy.
- They fold in half, which is great when you want to zip around a store in one of their motorized carts (just fold them up and put them in the front basket while you shop)
- The hand grips are pretty comfortable and are molded to fit the hand nicely.
- The folks at Millennium Medical (the manufacturer) are really nice and helpful.
Conclusion:
These crutches just really are not for someone like me. I am a first time crutch user, and I had expected that these would make the whole crutching experience better. But after a week of solid use, I finally decided to go back to using the cheapo crutches my doctor gave me. I think that perhaps if you are someone who needs to be on crutches for a long, long time, it might be worth trying these out (I'm only going to be on them for a month or so). Or if you're someone who can learn to manage the springs, you could probably learn to move around really fast (my husband had a blast launching himself across the room on them). But when all is said and done, it was a frustrating experience for me. I prefer the stability and lightweightedness of standard crutches... and I also really like that standard crutches are not right and left hand specific.

Power of the shock! This new shock absorbing crutch with an ergonomically designed handle, is the new revolution in crutches. With a unique suspension system, the impact energy is absorbed by the crutch, and is not transferred to your body. It is returned positively using your own energy to move forward, SPRING ASSISTED. No more underarm jamming and pain…. The suspension system works with the extending and flexing of the elbows to keep the underarm cradle stable. The underarm cradle does not jam upward which saves underarm pain and injury. Combining the unique suspension with ergonomic handle, which reduces pressure on the hands, the Millennial Crutch becomes the innovative solution to years of pain and frustration with crutch use. Also, IT FOLDS for easy storage and travel. Medical studies document that repetitive crutch use causes secondary injury and pain to the body. Yet, no one, until now has attempted to solve the problems which has gone on for years!! Winner of the National Merit Award, 2005-2006 Best New Product, the crutch continues to receive excellent customer satisfaction ratings. “We have designed a viable clinical solution to stop pain and injury of traditional underarm crutch use” said Dr. Brad J. Larson, Orthoapaedic Surgeon and Developer. Backed with a one year warranty, the manufacturer remains committed to those using the product. We believe in the highest standards of customer service, and make our customers our number one priority. The unique compression technology reverses impact energy. Upon impact the suspension compresses, collecting the energy, and results in downward pressure as the elbows extend. This eliminates upward motion, reduces nerve, skin and muscle damage resulting from a “jamming” of the underarm cradle. Energy reversal prohibits upward motion, alleviating axiliary or underarm pressure. This can not be achieved in any other crutch with out a suspension system..../ Millennial Crutch - Set of 2 Short (4'7" - 5'6") Colors May Vary / crutches
